Risk Specialist


Sutter Medical Group (SMG) is currently seeking a dynamic Risk Specialist, to join our Administrative Services team. Based out of our Sacramento (Natomas) office, this position is currently hybrid, meaning it comes with a mix of in-person and remote work. The Risk Specialist contributes to the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of systems, programs and policies designed to reduce or eliminate loss/risk exposure. Under general direction, the incoming individual administers the professional and general liability risk management program for SMG performing a variety of complex administrative functions in direct support of multiple administrators.


This position allows the incoming employee to be a member of the medical group, joining over 1,200 clinicians committed to providing the highest quality, most efficient and compassionate patient-centered healthcare to each of our diverse patients.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with presentation creation and delivery
  • Assist with data tracking and auditing
  • Ensures malpractice insurance is in place for every clinician accounting for regular updates/changes
  • Provide administrative support to Senior Medical Directors
  • Supports investigations related to clinical patient safety reports, provides analysis, and follows-up with leadership as appropriate.
  • Interfaces with numerous partners related to malpractice and risk
  • Provides consultative services to affiliate leadership, staff and committees or task forces
  • Facilitates administrative processes and programs to support risk program
  • Exercises independent judgement
  • Creates communications including research, proofing, editing and finalizing correspondence, reports and presentations
  • Prioritizes assignments to achieve objects and meet competing deadlines
  • Works independently, while still being part of the team, building collaborative relationships on day-to-day operations and strategic projects
  • Utilizes Microsoft Office Suite on daily basis
  • Maintains confidentiality
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills & Knowledge

  • Principles and practices of medical malpractice and other liability/risk insurance administration.
  • Working knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards and best practices related to healthcare risk management including methods to limit exposure.
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills with a keen attention to details
  • Investigative and interviewing skills to obtain the necessary information to draw logical conclusions
  • Demonstrates a proactive approach in identifying and addressing issues and concerns.
  • Displays a customer service focus in all decisions and actions.
    • Uses tact, discretion, initiative, and independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Prepares clear and concise correspondence and other written materials.
  • Researching, compiling, and summarizing a variety of informational and statistical data and materials.

  • Applying logical thinking to solve problems or accomplish tasks.
  • Understanding, interpreting and communicating complicated policies, procedures and protocols.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's: Risk Management, Insurance, Finance, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration or related field or equivalent education/experience; or a combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job
  • PREFERRED EXPERIENCE (AS TYPICALLY ACQUIRED IN):
  • 2+ years experience in healthcare risk management.
  • 2+ years experience developing, implementing and/or monitoring of healthcare risk management related programs or services.
  • 2+ years experience with conducting investigations related to patient/employee safety and/or liability claims.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint and Outlook. Experience with Adobe products, Survey Tools, etc.
  • Ability to work early/late (few times a month) occasionally with travel to locations around the greater Sacramento area
  • Well-developed time management and organizational skills
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills with a keen attention to details.
  • Ability to identify and assess situations/issues presenting an existing or potential risk exposure.

SMG offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, 401k, and more. Compensation is commensurate with experience and highly competitive.

Compensation: $35.52 - $49.46 an hour
