Sutter West Bay Medical Group (SWBMG) is seeking an experienced and dynamic Advanced Practice Clinician (APC) Executive Director to lead and oversee the integration, performance, and development of our APC teams across various specialties, including, but not limited to, Women's Health, Primary Care, Medical Specialties and Surgical Specialties. This leadership role will collaborate closely with physician leaders and administrators across the care continuum (ambulatory and acute care) to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care and operational excellence. This role reports directly to the Sutter West Bay Medical Group Chief Executive Officer. This role requires a high degree of activation energy and adaptability, functioning in a dynamic, start-up–like environment where building structure, process, and culture will be central to success.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Development
• Directly supervise and mentor APC lead roles overseeing Women's Health, Primary Care, Medical Specialty Services and Surgical Specialty Services.
• Dyad with physician chair and attending physician leaders, and foster a collaborative leadership structure amongst APC leads, physician leaders, and administrators to drive clinical and operational initiatives and performance.
• Establish and lead an operating and meeting rhythm for the APC workforce. Immediately establish and chair regular forums for the APC groups to convene.
• Participate in the SWBMG annual leadership goal setting process.
• Oversee annual APC review (progress reports) process, coordinating distribution, education, completion and feedback.
• Guide clinical orientation, including development of an APC “residency program”, and lead ongoing professional development for APCs.
• Establish and lead an APC leadership development program.
• Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention strategies for APCs across all specialties.
• Participate as an invited member of the SWBMG Executive Leadership Team and Board.
Clinical Oversight & Quality Assurance
• Ensure APCs adhere to clinical best practices, institutional policies, and regulatory standards.
• Conduct regular performance evaluations and case reviews to maintain high standards of care and exceed quality and safety standards.
• Address and resolve clinical performance issues in partnership with HR and physician leadership.
Operational Management
• Oversee scheduling and resource allocation to ensure optimal APC coverage across specialties.
• Accountable, through APC leads, for APC performance to practice management performance measures (AIP dashboard, productivity optimization, patient experience, EPIC
• Oversee APC leads ensuring effective and collaborative partnerships with the respective physician lead dyads in co-management of front-line teams.
• Support management of APC-related administrative functions, including compliance documentation.
• Develop and manage the APC operational budget in alignment with SWBMG’s financial goals, ensuring prudent stewardship of resources while maintaining high-quality patient care.
• Monitor and report on APC workforce financial performance, including productivity, revenue, expense management, and contribution margin, ensuring accountability to practice management and organizational benchmarks.
• Partner with finance and administrative leaders to analyze APC staffing models, workload distribution, and compensation structures for cost-effectiveness and sustainability.
• Ensure APC services meet or exceed financial, operational, and patient access targets, balancing quality outcomes with fiscal responsibility.
Strategic Planning & Collaboration
• Participate in strategic planning to align APC services with organizational goals and patient needs.
• Represent APC interests in hospital-wide committees and initiatives.
• Advocate for APC roles in shaping clinical protocols and policies.
• Contribute to long-range workforce and financial planning for APC services, aligning resource allocation with projected patient demand, organizational growth, and market trends.
• Evaluate return on investment (ROI) for APC programs and initiatives, making data-informed recommendations on resource deployment, program expansion, or restructuring.
Qualifications
Qualifications
• Master’s degree in nursing or physician assistant studies required, MBA or MHA preferred.
• Current, unrestricted California licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA).
• Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience as an APC, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive operational and clinical performance.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in a multi-specialty medical group or integrated health system.
• Familiarity with California healthcare regulations and APC scope of practice.
• Demonstrated experience in budget development, financial performance management, and resource allocation within a clinical or operational leadership role.
• Proven ability to integrate financial stewardship with workforce planning and clinical operations.
• Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) systems and data analytics.
• Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
